JAPANESE MOUNTAIN GRAPE / CRIMSON GLORY VINE

From the northern and mountainous areas of Japan and Korea this deciduous climber is sometimes grown as an ornamental with its rich red autumn coloured foliage. The small purple-black fruits have a delicious intense flavour especially when made into juices and jellies for enhancing the palate. They contain health giving minerals and vitamins that are traditionally used by the Ainu of Hokkaido into a nutritious tonic especially for children. The leaves and stems are used externally for bruising. Provide support and a moderately fertile soil with a little shade for southern gardens.
