From Japan, Korea and China where it grows in woodland usually near to water. Here it grows well in a slightly moist fertile soil with a little shade. A very large vigorous handsome herbaceous perennial, so give plenty of space from other plants. The tender young shoots can be cooked and eaten as a vegetable. The juice from the leaf and roots have a reputation for providing headache and pain relief.
