A native deciduous shrub with slightly oriental looking yellow flowers followed by bright red berries, used in medieval times as a high vitamin C jelly. In Europe and in India the root and bark are used extensively, for example as a liver tonic and detoxicant and for their anti-cancer effects. Sow seeds outside in the autumn.
