A stately biennial growing up to 2 metres high, sow the seeds in situ in spring and autumn. The young leaves are edible and the root is used in medicine. The lovely egg shaped powdery blue flowers attract many insects, the seeds are eaten by goldfinches. The dried seed heads have bristles that can be used to tease out wool.
